Very promising and i can't see it dying anytime soon. I still do scripting to perform many automation jobs and that saves me a lot of time and i can run many scripts in the background.
I have been trainer for many 5 days ILT sessions for shell scripting and i can vouch that if you are serious you can make a career out of it.
